Edmonton and Winter Hotspot Calgary Top List
Hotwire.com(R), a leading discount travel site, today announced the results of the December Hotwire(R) Canadian Hotel Rate Report. This monthly report features the top five cities in Canada where hotel rates have dropped the most. When combined with Hotwire's already discounted prices, the Hotel Rate Report helps guide customers to the destinations that will maximize their travel dollars. This month, Edmonton, home to the West Edmonton Mall, the largest shopping mall in North America, topped the list with a rate drop of 12 percent. Also making the list are tourist friendly destinations Calgary, Niagara Falls, and Montreal (percent drops of 7, 6 and 6, respectively).
Overall, price drops have tightened up a bit as rates last year were unseasonably low due to the recession and the fluctuating Canadian dollar. Still, with leisure travel down and the winter sports season in full swing, hotels, such as those in hotspots like Calgary, are lowering rates in hopes of luring ski and snowboard enthusiasts. In addition, popular cities like Montreal and Toronto are offering great deals this month to peak travelers' interest before Vancouver steals the limelight with the Winter Olympics.
